HEPATITIS C
HEPATITIS C IS A VIRUS THAT PRIMARILY AFFECTS THE LIVER AND CAN LEAD TO CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE, CIRRHOSIS, AND LIVER CANCER.
The virus is transmitted through direct contact with blood. The first cases of what would become known as Hepatitis C were identified in the early 1970s, and the virus was officially named in 1989.
There is no vaccine for Hepatitis C, but there are effective treatments available that can cure the virus in most cases.
Whilst there are several tests to confirm the presence of Hepatitis C, they are expensive, and as the virus does not present any symptoms until considerable damage has been done, are often not conducted until it is too late.
